APY was launched on 9 May 2015.
It is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
It primarily targets workers in the unorganised sector and seeks to provide old-age income security.
Subscribers receive a guaranteed minimum pension of ₹1,000–₹5,000 per month after attaining 60 years, depending on the contribution option.
Eligibility is generally for Indian citizens aged 18–40 years with a savings bank/post-office account.
The Union Cabinet approved continuation of APY up to FY 2030–31.
APY crossed 9 crore gross enrolments in April 2026.
