Blue Straggler Star and Stellar Evolution

 

A Blue Straggler Star (BSS) is a star in a stellar cluster that appears younger, hotter, brighter and more massive than other stars of similar age.

They are considered "stragglers" because they appear to have remained on the main sequence longer than expected.

In July 2026, Indian astronomers and international collaborators reported a rare blue straggler caught in the process of formation, providing direct evidence about its formation mechanism. The system studied was TIC 327546480 in the old open cluster Collinder 261, around 9,500 light-years away.
