What are Babirusas?

Babirusas are unusual wild pigs belonging to the genus:

Babyrousa

Distribution

Primarily associated with Indonesian islands, particularly:

  • Sulawesi
  • Buru
  • Sula Islands depending on species.

Characteristics

  • Long curved canine teeth/tusks.
  • Omnivorous diet.
  • Forest-dwelling mammals.
  • Some species have restricted island distributions.

Conservation

The hairy babirusa (Babyrousa babirussa) is listed as Vulnerable by IUCN-linked specialist sources. Threats include habitat loss and hunting.

Babirusas are also protected under Indonesian law and have been associated with CITES Appendix I under earlier taxonomic treatment.
