Vaccination Strategy

FMD

  • Cattle.

  • Buffaloes.

  • Sheep.

  • Goats.

  • Pigs.

  • Mass vaccination at regular intervals.

Brucellosis

  • Female bovine calves.

  • Target age → approximately 4–8 months.

  • Once-in-a-lifetime vaccination approach under the programme.

Other Components

  • Ear-tagging.

  • Animal registration.

  • INAPH database.

  • Animal health cards.

  • Serosurveillance.

  • Vaccine cold chain.

  • Disease investigation.

  • Quarantine/animal movement monitoring.

Financial Structure

It is a Central Sector Scheme, meaning funding is provided by the Central Government.

Recent Progress

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the programme had administered around 147.16 crore FMD vaccine doses, benefiting approximately 8.04 crore farmers; reported FMD outbreaks declined from 132 in 2019 to 40 in 2025.

Targets

  • FMD control through vaccination.

  • Eventual FMD eradication by 2030.
