National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID): Objectives and Functions
UPSC Notes
The National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) is an Indian government initiative designed to help authorised security and law-enforcement agencies access and analyse relevant information from multiple databases for intelligence purposes.
Its development was accelerated following the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which highlighted the need for better information sharing and coordinated investigation.
Major objectives
Improve access to relevant information for authorised agencies.
Support intelligence analysis and investigations.
Facilitate the detection of suspicious patterns and links.
Improve coordination in counterterrorism and serious criminal investigations.
Key Pointers for UPSC
NATGRID is associated with India's internal-security and intelligence framework.
It is an information-access and analysis platform, not a military force.
Its utility depends on authorised access, reliable data and inter-agency coordination.
Data protection, privacy, accountability and appropriate safeguards are important considerations.
Do not confuse NATGRID with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which investigates specified offences under Indian law.
