National Mission on Edible Oils: Objectives and Significance

Category: Agriculture and Government Schemes

UPSC Notes

India's edible-oil policy aims to improve domestic production, reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers.

Two major initiatives are particularly relevant:

  • National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP): Launched in 2021 to expand oil-palm cultivation, increase domestic crude palm oil production and support farmers and the processing sector.

  • National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds): Approved in 2024 for the 2024–25 to 2030–31 period to improve domestic oilseed production and processing.

Major objectives

  • Increase productivity of oilseed crops such as mustard, soybean, groundnut, sunflower and sesame.

  • Expand cultivation of oil palm in suitable regions.

  • Improve access to quality seeds and modern agricultural practices.

  • Strengthen processing, storage and market linkages.

  • Reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in international edible-oil prices.

Key Pointers for UPSC

  • India imports substantial quantities of edible oils.

  • Palm oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil are important components of global edible-oil trade.

  • Oil palm requires suitable climatic and water conditions; expansion must consider ecological sustainability.

  • NMEO-OP and NMEO-Oilseeds are related but distinct initiatives.

  • The broader policy connects agricultural productivity, food security, import management and farmer income.
