RK-251 Smart Cancer Drug: Tumour-Activated Therapy Developed by Indian Researchers

UPSC Relevance: Biotechnology | Health | Science & Technology

Why in News?

Indian scientists have developed an experimental drug candidate called RK-251, designed to become activated preferentially in the tumour environment.

How Does It Work?

Cancer cells often contain elevated levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).

RK-251:

  • Remains comparatively inactive in healthier tissue.

  • High ROS conditions trigger activation.

  • Releases an anticancer payload called NBDHEX.

Research Institutions

Research involved scientists associated with:

  • Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology.

  • IIT Guwahati.

Important Caution

It remains a preclinical drug candidate and has not yet established efficacy or safety in human patients.
