Why in News?

Indian defence start-up D-Propulse demonstrated a Rotating Detonation Engine at a DRDO facility in Hyderabad.

What is an RDE?

An advanced propulsion system that sustains one or more continuously rotating detonation waves inside an annular combustion chamber.

Difference

Conventional engines:
Fuel burns through deflagration — flame propagates subsonically.

RDE:
Fuel undergoes detonation — combustion front travels supersonically.

Advantages

Potentially:

  • Higher thermodynamic efficiency.

  • Compact engine design.

  • Better fuel efficiency.

  • High thrust-to-weight ratios.

Some estimates suggest potential efficiency gains of roughly 10–25% compared with conventional combustors. (PMF IAS)
