Cell Broadcast System (CBS) launched for disaster warnings (C‑DOT)
What: Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia launched an indigenous Cell Broadcast System developed by C‑DOT (with NDMA & MHA) to send geo‑targeted emergency alerts to all mobile devices in defined areas.
Integration: Works with CAP‑based Integrated Alert System SACHET; complementary to SMS/SMS‑based alerts.
Significance:
Disaster management: Enables rapid, simultaneous, area‑specific alerts (e.g., floods, cyclones, earthquakes), improving early warning and response.
Telecom & governance: Indigenous solution reduces dependence on foreign tech; aligns telecom, disaster and admin agencies.
UPSC relevance: Disaster risk reduction, digital public infrastructure, convergence of ministries/agencies.
Practice Q: Assess how cell broadcast technology strengthens national early warning systems and key governance issues for its effective use.
