- Observed: 17 July annually to commemorate adoption of Rome Statute of ICC in 1998 and promote accountability for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, crime of aggression.
- Background:
- Rome Statute - founding treaty of ICC adopted 17 July 1998 during UN Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries in Rome, Italy. Adopted by 120 countries, came into force 1 July 2002, establishes ICC. No jurisdiction over crimes before 1 July 2002.
- International Justice Day declared during first Review Conference of Rome Statute in Kampala, Uganda in 2010.
