- Observed: 26 July annually as Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate Indian Army victory over Pakistan in 1999 Kargil War through Operation Vijay, honours courage, valour, sacrifice of Armed Forces.

- Background:
- War began May 1999 when ∼1500 Pakistani soldiers and militants crossed LoC occupied Indian territory in Kargil sector J&K [now UT Ladakh] aiming to cut NH-1A, disrupt Srinagar-Leh connectivity, isolate forces at Siachen.
- Intrusion first detected 3 May 1999 violation of Shimla Agreement 1972.
- IAF launched Operation Safed Sagar 26 May 1999 - first use of air-to-ground strikes.
- IA launched Operation Vijay to recapture posts.
