MoES Celebrates 20th Foundation Day - Launches New Weather and Ocean Initiatives
- Celebrated on: 27 July 2026 at Prithvi Bhawan, New Delhi.
- Presided by: Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary, MoES - marking 20 years contributions to weather forecasting, earth systems, oceanography, seismology, polar research.
- IMD-led Initiatives:
- Established 13 Centres of Excellence for specialised meteorological research.[CoEs]
- Upgraded Thiruvananthapuram Cyclone Warning Centre into Area Cyclone Warning Centre [ACWC].
- Launched IMD NOVA for thunderstorm nowcast monitoring.
- MoU with ICAR-NIVEDI [National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics] to establish Weather Driven Animal Disease Risk Forecasting Unit [WAADRU] for district-level livestock disease forecasting.
- NCMRWF-led Initiatives: [National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting]
- WINGS mobile app for numerical weather prediction and real-time analysis.
- National Doppler Weather Radar Reflectivity Mosaic to monitor severe weather.
- Upgraded Open Data Portal to expand weather and ocean datasets.
- NCS-led Initiatives: [National Centre for Seismology]
- Compendium of Monthly Seismological Bulletins 2023 & 2024 - validated earthquake catalogues.
- Strong Motion Atlas of India 2010-2020 - compilation of strong ground-motion records for earthquake engineering and hazard assessment.
- CMLRE-led Initiatives: [Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology]
- Taxonomic manuals covering 100 Tintinnid ciliate species and 225 seamount-associated species.
- SOPs for collection, preservation, analysis of marine biological samples.
- UPSC Relevance: GS3 - Disaster Management, Meteorology, Oceanography, Seismology, GS1 - Physical Geography.
