Purpose: Raise awareness about widows’ rights, discrimination, poverty, and human rights issues.
Initiation:
Started by Loomba Foundation in 2005.
UN adopted resolution in 2010 (A/RES/65/189).
Significance:
First UN observance in 2011.
Date significance: Founder Lord Raj Loomba’s father died on 23 June 1954, making his mother a widow.
