Anglo-Sikh Wars - Key Points to Remember [1845-1849]
1. WHY WARS HAPPENED?
- Sikh Empire built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1799-1839) - most powerful independent state before 1857.
- After his death in 1839, political instability: 4 rulers in 6 years, power struggle between Rani Jindan, Lal Singh, Teja Singh.
- British policy: Ring-fence + Subsidiary - wanted buffer, but after Ranjit's death saw opportunity to annex Punjab.

- Total period: 1845-1849 -> Annexation of Punjab
3. FIRST ANGLO-SIKH WAR (1845-46) - COURSE
British: 20-30k troops | Sikhs: ∼50k under Lal Singh & Teja Singh (both treacherous)
5 Battles in order - Mnemonic: M-F-B-A-S
- Mudki - 18 Dec 1845 - British win
- Ferozeshah - 21-22 Dec 1845 - British barely won, Sikhs betrayed
- Baddowal - 21 Jan 1846 - Ranjodh Singh Majithia burned British cantonment
- Aliwal - 28 Jan 1846 - British upper hand
- Sobraon - 10 Feb 1846 - Decisive - First war ends
Reason for Sikh defeat: Not British superiority, but betrayal of own generals Lal Singh & Teja Singh.
4. TREATIES AFTER FIRST WAR - 3 Treaties - MOST IMP FOR PRELIMS:
- Treaty of Lahore - 9 March 1846 (8 March also accepted): Humiliating terms. Sikh army reduced to 20k infantry, 12k cavalry. War indemnity Rs 1.5 cr, Sikhs couldn't pay full.
- Treaty of Amritsar - 16 March 1846: Because Sikhs couldn't pay full indemnity, Kashmir + Jammu sold to Gulab Singh for Rs 75 lakhs. He became independent ruler of J&K - Beginning of Dogra dynasty.
- Treaty of Bhairowal - Dec 1846: Rani Jindan removed from Regency. Council of 8 Sikh Sardars under British Resident Henry Lawrence to rule Punjab. Maharaja Duleep Singh minor.
5. SECOND ANGLO-SIKH WAR (1848-49) - COURSE
Cause: Sikh resentment over Lahore Treaty + Revolt in Multan (killing of 2 British officers by Mulraj's troops) + Hazara uprising.
Incharge: Lord Dalhousie personally supervised - followed Doctrine of Lapse mindset.
3 Major Battles:
- Ramnagar - 22 Nov 1848 - Inconclusive, under Sir Hugh Gough
- Chillianwala - 13 Jan 1849 - Bloodiest battle - British claimed win but heavy losses, Sikhs fought bravely
- Gujarat (Battle of Guns) - 21 Feb 1849 - Near Chenab River. Decisive. Sikhs + Afghan allies crushed. Sikh resistance collapsed.
Other: Siege of Multan - Mulraj surrendered Jan 1849.
6. OUTCOME OF SECOND WAR:
- Annexation of Punjab - 29 March 1849 by Lord Dalhousie
- Maharaja Duleep Singh (11 years old) deposed, sent to England on pension
- Rani Jindan separated, confined at Firozpur, stripped of wealth
- Sir John Lawrence - First Chief Commissioner of Punjab
- Dalhousie made Marquis for this conquest
7. KOH-I-NOOR STORY - PRELIMS FAVOURITE:
- Part of Sikh treasury. Ranjit Singh wanted to donate it to Jagannath Temple, Puri.
- British ignored will, took it under Treaty of Lahore 1849 and sent to British Crown. Now in Tower of London.
8. IMPACT:
- End of last major independent Indian state before 1857
- Punjab became British recruitment ground - Sikhs became backbone of British Indian Army
- Shaped Sikh consciousness and resistance spirit - later Singh Sabha Movement
- British got NW frontier - direct confrontation with Afghanistan later
9. ANGLO-SIKH WAR MEMORIAL:
- Location: Ferozeshah - honors Sikh soldiers of Mudki, Ferozeshah, Sobraon, Chillianwala
- Built by Punjab Govt, near Rajasthan Canal & Sirhind Feeder on GT Road
- Architect: H.S. Chopra under Dr. M.S. Randhawa
- 3 storey, ground floor museum has weapons + bronze inscriptions from Shah Mohammad's Jangnama and Cunningham's History of Sikhs.
