Keelback Snake

  • “Keelback” refers to snakes characterised by keeled scales, in which each scale has a raised ridge.

  • Many keelbacks are non-venomous and associated with moist or aquatic habitats.

  • Their diet can include frogs, lizards, fish and tadpoles.

  • In 2026, researchers documented two rare keelback species in Northeast India:

    • Rakhine Keelback – Herpetoreas davidi in Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary

    • Kachin Hills Keelback – Hebius gilhodesi in Namdapha National Park and Kamlang Tiger Reserve.
