Re-Circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS)
Category: Agriculture / Fisheries
- RAS is an intensive aquaculture technology in which water is continuously filtered, treated and reused.
- It allows fish production with considerably less water than conventional aquaculture.
- Important components include mechanical filtration, biological filtration, aeration/oxygenation and water-quality monitoring.
- RAS permits high-density fish farming and can be used in areas with limited water availability.
- Under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), RAS is supported as a high-density aquaculture technology.
- Government data reported approval of 12,000 RAS units with a total cost of ₹902.97 crore during 2020–21 to 2024–25.
