Context Window in Artificial Intelligence
Category: Science & Technology / Artificial Intelligence / Digital Technology
What is a Context Window?
A context window is the amount of information an AI model can process as context during a particular interaction.
It is generally measured in tokens.
The context may include:
User instructions
Previous conversation
Documents
Tool outputs
Model-generated content.
Why Important?
A larger context window can allow an AI system to:
Process longer documents
Maintain more conversation history
Analyse larger codebases
Work with extensive datasets
Perform multi-step tasks with more information available.
Limitations
A larger context window does not automatically guarantee better accuracy.
Possible problems include:
Context overload
Reduced attention to relevant information
Higher computational requirements
Increased cost
Retrieval/recall problems in very long contexts.
OpenAI similarly defines the context window as the total token capacity available for a request, including relevant input/output components depending on the system.
Prelims Pointers
Context window → measured in tokens
Token ≠ necessarily a complete word.
Larger context → ability to process more information.
Context window ≠ model's training-data size.
