What is One Health?

The One Health approach recognises the interconnectedness of:

  • Human health

  • Animal health

  • Environmental health.

National One Health Mission

  • Approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024.

  • Steered by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.

  • Involves more than 16 Central Ministries/Departments.

  • DHR/ICMR is an important implementing component.

Objectives

  • Zoonotic disease preparedness

  • Pandemic preparedness

  • Integrated surveillance

  • Antimicrobial resistance management

  • Better coordination between sectors.

Key Idea

Disease outbreaks cannot always be addressed through the human-health sector alone.
