- A VPN creates an encrypted connection between a device and a remote server.
It can help:
- Protect data on insecure networks.
- Mask the user’s apparent IP address.
- Secure remote access to organisational networks.
VPNs are widely used for:
- Remote work.
- Secure communication.
- Accessing internal office resources.
- A VPN does not guarantee complete anonymity.
- The VPN provider may still be able to observe certain traffic metadata.
VPN security depends on:
- Encryption.
- Authentication.
- Protocols.
- Provider policies.
- Common VPN protocols include WireGuard, OpenVPN and IPsec.
- A VPN is different from antivirus software and does not itself remove malware.
